Children’s privacy and parental consent
Before a child uses SmartStart4U, a parent or guardian reads this notice and agrees to it. Here is exactly what that means.
Version 2026-10-draft-1 · Draft, awaiting legal review
Who we are
SmartStart4U is a learning website for children aged 5 to 10, run by Raising Bharat (A Raising Bharat Initiative). You can reach us at [email protected] or +91 7396 115 698.
Why a parent agrees first
India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 allows a child’s personal data to be used only with the consent of a parent or lawful guardian. So a grown-up creates the account and agrees before a child uses it. Children cannot agree for themselves.
What we collect
- Sign-in details from Microsoft: the account holder’s name, email address and an account ID. Microsoft handles the password; we never see it.
- Your consent record: which version of this notice you agreed to, whether you are a parent or a teacher, and when.
- Learning ticks: which stories, games and activities are marked as done. Today these stay on your own device.
What we never do
- No adverts, and no advertising aimed at children.
- No tracking or behavioural monitoring of children.
- No selling or sharing of data for marketing.
- No chat, comments or contact with strangers.
Why we use it
Only to sign you in, to show your child’s learning and stickers, and to keep proof of your consent.
Where it is kept, and for how long
Sign-in is handled by Microsoft Entra. Consent records are kept in Microsoft 365 (SharePoint), which only our service can reach. [PLACEHOLDER: data storage location, confirmed by legal review]
We keep your data until you withdraw consent or ask us to delete your account. Consent records are kept as proof of what was agreed. [PLACEHOLDER: retention period, confirmed by legal review]
Your rights
- See the personal data we hold about you and your child, and have it corrected.
- Ask us to delete it.
- Withdraw consent at any time: go to My learning, then “Your account”. Withdrawing signs you out and removes the learning ticks on that device.
- Name someone to act for you if you cannot.
- Complain to us at [email protected]. [PLACEHOLDER: Grievance Officer name and response time, confirmed by legal review] If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
For teachers
Teachers may use SmartStart4U with their class under their school’s policies. The school is responsible for getting parents’ consent for classroom use. [PLACEHOLDER: classroom terms, confirmed by legal review]
